3But Joab replied to the king, “May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
4The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enroll the fighting men of Israel.
From Harper’s Bible Commentary: “To number the people is to number the army (the same word in Hebrew). A census is a tool for centralizing power; its purpose e is usually to raise taxes and an army. The great irony of this story is that it is Joab, the power broker at the center of this centralized government, who protests against the action”
Richard: This is very much like the current situation in our government. Men of good conscience, such as those working int he FBI and New York Special Victims Unit (sexual crimes) are pressuring and leaders such as James Comey and releasing information of the curruption that is occurring.
