11.2.4. Tongil (Unification) Candle

Summary:
The Unification Candle originated from a special 120-day prayer condition offered by True Mother and the True Children from September 5, 1995, to January 2, 1996, to support True Father’s crucial speaking tour in America. During this period, the children united without objection and lit this candle every night at midnight to pray and offer deep spiritual devotion from their various locations. By bequeathing this unique candle—which is physically one but spiritually represents three candles infused with the True Children’s love—True Mother encourages all members to connect with this flame of loyalty and fulfill their own responsibilities. Ultimately, lighting the Unification Candle serves as an eternal promise to maintain an unchanging heart of love, helping to expand a holy foundation until all of humankind is purified and can enter heaven together.

God’s Love and Light Is Symbolized by Holy Candles

A candle sacrifices itself to give off light. In this way, it symbolizes the need for sacrifice in order to unite humanity centered on God.

    Where will people go? They will go to the mountains in search of nature. Yet, it will become boring just living in a mountain area. That is why people will go to the sea. In the future, people should go into the sea and eventually live there. I have already asked various scholars to carry out research on submarines, and their work is almost done. They say that if a submarine goes down just thirty meters into the water, it will be calm underneath, even if there is a storm above. No matter how hard the wind blows or how rough the waves are, there is no disturbance thirty meters below the water surface. There are no winds or waves thirty meters below. That is why if you press a button and go down thirty or a hundred meters, you will immediately be able to enjoy the scenery of the ocean using a periscope. (236-309, 1992.11.9)

    Only by receiving the Blessing will it be possible to register into the Kingdom of Heaven. Through this, humankind can finally inherit the Kingdom of God. They can form heavenly families, tribes, a people, nations, world, and cosmos. Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven is formed, and they become citizens of that kingdom by being registered in it. Originally, the relatives of the first parents should have been registered in the kingdom. However, because those parents fell, we had to pass through numerous periods in history, and gather those to be registered from the entire world. That is why you need to restore through indemnity the unfulfilled mission of Jesus, by accomplishing your duties as tribal messiahs. In order to do so, you need to take responsibility for each nation in the world and dedicate that nation to the Kingdom of Heaven. (269‑303, 1995.5.1)

Summary:
The Unification movement utilizes sacred candles to bless and protect families, beginning with the Shimjung Candle, created on January 5, 1961, which symbolizes True Parents and is lit during prayer to comfort God’s sorrowful heart and reinforce human determination during this time of restoration. Next, the Birth Candle originated with the birth of True Parents’ first daughter and is lit specifically during childbirth to completely sanctify the spiritual atmosphere and block Satan from approaching the newborn baby. The Ae Cheon Candles, or Love of God Candles, were created on May 16, 1984, and are used in pairs to symbolize how a husband and wife must sacrifice for each other—just like a candle and wick combining to produce light—in order to bring divine peace and unity to humanity. Ultimately, lighting these candles creates a powerful realm of unified heart that blocks out all evil, discord, and injustice, bringing God’s eternal protection and sovereign power over both the spirit and physical worlds.

    Birth Candles originated at the time of Ye-jin nim’s birth (True Parents’ first daughter). After the 36 Couples started married life, True Father bequeathed one Birth Candle to each family.
    Now I would like to pass on to each family the traditional Birth Candles that True Parents bequeathed to the 36 Couples. The Birth Candle that I have now will be used symbolizing the Birth Candle that True Parents originally used. Let these families receive the Birth Candle and cherish it in the same heart. I pray in Your name and with Your glory that when this candle burns during a child’s birth, it will sanctify the spiritual atmosphere and completely prevent Satan from approaching.

    Our families and the Kingdom of Heaven have similar characteristics. There are parents, husband and wife, children, and brothers and sisters in a family. The household can be united through love. In a family, unification can be established, life can be connected, and the ideal can be realized. Therefore, you can become qualified to enter the Kingdom of Heaven when you respect conjugal love and parental love. Grandparents hand down love to parents, who hand down love to husband and wife, who hand down love to children.
     If you deny any one of these, the Kingdom of Heaven cannot be established. You should love your parents more than you love your spouse, and you should love your grandparents more than you love your parents. This is the essence of Heaven and the ideal motto. (Blessed Family – 946)

    Everything in the created world is prepared like a textbook so that God’s beloved sons and daughters can seek out the ideal of love. That is why everything exists in a pair system. The mineral kingdom operates through the relationship of subject partner and object partner. In atoms, too, protons and electrons interact through the relationship of subject partner and object partner. Without this interaction they cannot continue to exist.
